The Hawaiian language was outlawed in Hawai’i in the year 1896 following the US invasion of the island through the “Act 57” law; a law that prohibits Hawaiians to speak in their native tongue while forcing them to speak English. This law was made in attempt to assimilate the Native Hawaiian population into the United States.
As a tribute to my family and ancestors who were subjected to this discrimination, I created a typeface inspired by Native Hawaiian textiles also known as “Kapa” that will also be optimized for the Hawaiian language. It is important to preserve our culture and restore the time in was stripped away from us.
